In 1394, the crown granted mines on the demesne of Wenlock
Abbey to James Mynour of Derbyshire. These were considered to be
Mines Royal. Would Wenlock Abbey have stood to benefit in anyway from
this grant? I can envisage reasons why the Abbey would have wanted
either money or at least royal favour at this time, as they were
trying to free themselves from ties with the French Cluniacs and
this, (as I understand it), required both cash and a royal charter.
