I went to a day school at Bristol University Continuing Education Department
a while ago. It was a very interesting day and it looks like Nick is now
doing something very similar in a few one and a half hour chunks starting
next January.
Highly recommended by me . . Details follow . . .
Secret Underground Cities by Nick McCamley
Secret underground cities examines the world that lies 100 feet below the
countryside of North Wiltshire. The development of the Box Tunnel revealed
the extent of the stone reserves, and during the Second World War some
5,000,000 square feet of disused quarries were converted into huge and
complex underground ammunition depots, repositories for the nation's art
treasures and - at Spring Quarry - into the largest underground factory in
the world. Finally, we look at the quarries during the Cold War, when many
were home to a series of top-secret communications centres, Britain's
Wartime Emergency Seat of Government and an important Sector Control Centre
for the ill-fated 'Rotor' radar system.
6 meetings weekly on Wednesdays from 2.30 to 4. 00 pm starting 15 January
2003, The Old Grammar School, Broad Street, Chipping Sodbury.
Fee £25.00
