Hi Ian. Up here in the North Pennines lead mines the word "chatts" was
more clearly defined than Martin suggests. Chatts were the middlings from
jigging or hotching - ie the material which was neither galena concentrate
nor waste, but the middle layer on the sieve which required further crushing
in the chatt rolls to liberate the ore.
