You say that UK museums are listed in the Museum's Yearbook, but did you
know that you can also find information on MINING museums specifically on
various websites via www.namho.org and then go to the members page.
Of those listed on this members page, several are mining museums or at least
conservation groups (preserving the extant remains at specific mine sites).
Most of the NAMHO members have links to their own websites from the NAMHO
members page. However, most of those that are mining museums in the UK are
not coal mines. Also beware, some of the museums with 'an underground
experience' part are actually reconstructions of mines, not the original
mine itself.
There are several mining museums (including some coal mining museums) in
the UK that are not NAMHO members. I am sure other list members will let us
know of others, but the main one that springs to mind is Big Pit in South
Wales who have a website at http://www.nmgw.ac.uk/bigpit/ This is probably
the deepest coal mining museum in the UK (also with underground tours), but
I am quite prepared to be corrected!
To partially answer one of your questions, I am sure that the deepest
preserved mine in Europe is very unlikely to be in the UK.
Good luck with your venture; please be sure to tell us all when we can come
to visit. It sounds at though it will be a fascinating site when its open to
the public.
All the best
Roger Gosling
NAMHO Treasurer
