The use of Arcwall cutters is fairly well described in Woodruff's
Methods of Mining
Dave
>The Arcwall cutters we use are tracked machines with 8' jibs which
>are used in 14' roadways. We did use flat bottomed cutters for our
>long wall faces (AB 15s) before the introduction of our first shearer
>face in 1993/94 which funnily enough uses a AB 16 to drive the
>shearer disc. I have been told the arcwaller machines were in use
>before the second world war but I have very little else about them. We
>are most certainly the last pit to use them and are perfect for the
>conditions in our pit requiring very little setting up to set them away in
>a heading. One arcwaller is still operating while the second one has
>been stopped and abanadoned. There are 3 left at surface await an
>unsure fate.
