There is a lot of software that has been developed for mapping caves some is
free, some is shareware so cheap. Much of it listed on the BCRA web pages @
http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/~arb/surveying/software.html The functionality
of the software varies but i have found Onstation and Compass very useful.
Most software takes data in a compass and tape format i.e. distance,
bearing, and inclination with the option of entering passage details as up,
down, left, and right measurements. Its all pretty idiot proof but you will
have to change your survey method slightly to collect data at more points in
order to produce a faithful 3D model due to the way the software deals with
changes to height and width.
