Judith,
I do not know about Yorkshire Terriers being used to catch rats in mines.
The Jack Russell terrier is the premier ratter kept by many farmers to keep
down vermin. It is possible that if there were rats around that they would
have been used in mines. My Jack Russell has not only caught rats whilst on
the lead but also very dangerous snakes!
