The following information is taken from 'Who's Who of British Members of
Parliament Vol.I 1832-1885',y Michael Stenton,The Harvester Press,1976,ISBN
0 391 00613 4.
Frederick Edward Blackett Beaumont of 7,Grosvenor Mansions,London
Son of Edward Blackett Beaumont and his wife Jane.Born in 1833.He was
unmarried.Educated at Harrow and the Royal Military Academy,Woolwich.Entered
the Royal Engineers August 1852,became Captain 1859,Major July 1872,retired
upon a pension October 1877.Served with the local rank of Captain in the
Turkish Contingent Engineers in 1855-56,and received a Turkish medal;served
also on the staff of the Royal Engineers during the India Mutiny,and
received a medal with one clasp for Lucknow.
He was a Liberal who voted for the disestablishment of the Irish Church in
1869.He sat for South Durham from December 1868 until he retired in 1880.He
died on 20 August 1899.

As he was a Major in the RE, Barry Job is probably correct and this is the right one. Making him a Colonel must be journalistic licence. A search of the Diamond Rock Boring Co. files at the PRO would probably solve the matter.
