In Draper, L and P, 1990, The Raasay Iron mine, page 4,
". . . early as 1607 Sir George Hay started an Ironwoks at Letterewe . . ."
". . . Sir Robert Gordon noted an abundance of iron ore in Sutherland 'of
which the inhabitants make good iron' also in the seventeenth century . . ."
" MacAdam (1886-7) cites finteen known old iron working sites in
Invernessshire alone, including one on 'Soa Island on the west coast of
Skye. . . '
Raasay was worked from 1909 (and by German prisoners of war in WWI) and
although a small bloomery was found no smelting was carried out on the island
