Trevor,
There never was a company of that ame - infact the mine was never really
known as the 'Old Combe Martin' during its working life. The company
operating the mine during its most successful phase in the 19th century was
the Combmartin and North Devon Mining Company, 1835-48. This company was
run along the lines of a 'cost book company' but, being outside the
Stannaries, was unregulated and effectively a simple partnership with
unlimited liability. Intended capital was 30,000 Pounds in 1200 shares, with
a first call of 5 Pounds in two instalments.
Material relating to the share holding of P G Jones, solicitor of
Carmarthen, are in the National Library of Wales / Llyfygell Genedlaethol
Cymru, Aberystwyth, amongst an uncataloged bundle in the Griffith E Owen
Papers, Box 54. Jones held two scrips of 10 shares, nos. 327 and 328, and
according to my notes the scrips, ie. share certificates, are amongst the
papers in the bundle. I'm sure photographic copies could be arranged but,
as I recall, they are of little aesthetic value.
