The normal birth research conference is booking up
very fast, and we are considering moving it to a
bigger venue. However, this will need a step-change in
numbers, so I am re-sending the information about the
conference to the various lists. I have copied the
information below, in case people are interested.
Normal Labour and Birth: 1st Research Conference
To be held October 28-30th 2002, University of Central
Lancashire, Preston, UK

Frances Day-Stirk, Royal College of Midwives, UK
This conference will address social, cultural,
physiological, psychological, emotional and spiritual
aspects of labour and birth. It will seek to establish
the current evidence base for the nature of, culture
around, and outcomes of labour and birth, with
particular emphasis on normal processes.
Day 1: workshops for people interested in
collaborating in various aspects of normal birth
research, including (titles may change):
1. setting up a network of sites where physiological
birth can be researched
2. seeking consensus on ways of systematically
reviewing qualitative research
3. reaching consenses on the statistics needed to
assess normal birth
evening social; Blackpool lights & meal
day 2; conference, with keynote speakers and 28 peer
reviewed papers from around the world

day 3; meeting of the post-symposium groups to address
action plans for maximising normal birth.
