How do healthcare systems work in major European countries?
A report on the Health Care Systems in Eight Countries by the European
Observatory
The Observatory's report provides up-to-date information on the health care
systems of eight countries, including the United Kingdom. The selection of
the eight countries represents the diversity of international experience of
both funding and delivering health care. The countries looked at are
Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden
and the UK.
For each country's health system, the Report covers:
* Who benefits and what are the benefits?
* Who pays and how much?
* Who collects the money and where does it go?
* How much is spent and on what?
* How do patients access services?
* What are the major challenges facing the health care system?
The publication of both reports coincides with the Chancellor of the
Exchequer's Budget announcement regarding the future funding of the UK
National Health Service.
Copies of both reports may be downloaded from www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/Wanless
or from the Observatory's website, www.observatory.dk
The European Health Care Systems Discussion Group, which looks at health
care systems change across the EU member states, with a remit to look at how
change has impinged on certain key factors, such as equity, now has its own
webpage. From the webpage you can download details of the Group's meetings,
including the papers that have presented at previous meetings.

Hello Mags
The New Zealand Ministry of Health on line publication which defines
maternity care to be given by the Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) whether
they be
a midwife, general Practictioner or obstetrician in New Zealand may be
of
help. As a generic document it sets up one model of care irrespective of
the
practitioner type. How it is interpreted is of course variable according
to
philosophy and discipline. As it demands continuity of care as its major
theme, more and more it has been picked up by midwives - over 70% of
LMCs
are now midwives.

This document does not necessarily cover the models used in hospitals
but
does if hospital midwives work as a group to provide LMC services.
The other document which you may find valuable for statistical info -
though
30% of data is missing (!) - is the 'Report on Maternity'

There is The National Health Committee 'Review of Maternity Services',
September 1999, which is online. This is the most recent review
(consumer
satisfaction). I couldnt get into the page tonight but
http://www.nhc.govt.nz/publications.htm will get you to the index and
scroll
down till you find the document.
Hope this helps.

Apologies for cross posting but I am trying to do a summary of
international models of maternity care (all aspects) and I would be most
grateful if my international colleagues could any of you provide me with
a brief description of models of maternity care in your country (not
just midwifery). I would also welcome any references or information you
have regarding models which have been evaluated (irrespective of
outcome).
Many thanks
