Charles Smith at Western Kentucky University sent details of two
websites that may be of interest to MERSENNE subscribers: he
writes,
The first was opened in expanded form in 2000 under the title "The
Alfred Russel Wallace Page." It contains much material by and
about naturalist and social critic Wallace (1823-1913), including
bibliographies, news items, commentaries, FAQs, a capsule
biography, lists (e.g., of all the personal names that appear in his
voluminous publications), and the full-text of about 200 of his
writings (including several books) and interviews. The URL
is:
http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/index1.htm
The second service opened earlier this year as "Early Classics in
Biogeography, Distribution, and Diversity Studies: To 1950." The
centerpiece is a (-n in part bibliometrically-arrived-at) selected
bibliography of nearly 500 works on this subject, with links to
biographical information on the authors and full-text of the sources
as available (I am still adding material, but with the help of JSTOR
there are already nearly 200 items accessible in full-text).
The URL is: http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/biogeog/
These are free (with the possible JSTOR qualification: your
institution must be a subscriber for you to have access),
noncommercial services that I hope can be used by students and
researchers alike. Please feel free to spread the word in any way
you might.
Thanks very much for your time and attention!
