----------
Following the very sudden and untimely death of Roy Porter, we had many kind
expressions of sadness, as well as some inquiries about making a donation on
his behalf. After discussions with his surviving partner, Natsu Hattori, it
was agreed to set up the 'Roy Porter Memorial Fund' at University College
London, the purpose of which is 'to help young scholars of the History of
Medicine.' How it will be used will depend partly on the total amount
accumulated in the fund. The first priority is to establish a 3-yr fully
funded PhD studentship in his name, but this is also the option that
requires the greatest capital in the fund; the second is a one-year master's
studentship; the third is a prize for writing in the field (either a
first-book prize or early-article prize). Further information may be
obtained by contacting Mr. Alan Shiel, The Wellcome Trust Centre for the
History of Medicine at UCL, Euston House, 24 Eversholt St., London NW1 1AD
([log in to unmask]).
Please also note that the memorial event in his honour will take place at
3.30 pm on 22 April at St. Pancras Parish Church, Euston Rd., London.
