This is a message for all teachers of History of Science,
Technology and or Medicine in UK institutions of Higher Education
Our Learning and Teaching Support Network subject centre is
holding a workshop on Benchmarking for HSTM at University
College London on Saturday 23rd March. Places are still available
for those who wish to attend in order to discuss and refine the
preliminary draft of a Benchmark document for HSTM degree
programmes. This document is now available on-line at
http://www.prs-ltsn.ac.uk/hist_science/events/
This contains not only a preliminary draft of a proposed HSTM
supplement to the History Benchmark document, but also contains
a (draft) appendix that covers HSTM taught in 'service' courses and
electives rather than in formal degree programmes. That appendix
lays out some proposed claims on the general educational and
cultural value of undergraduate courses in HSTM and is intended
(in a suitably revised form) to be addressed to a wide audience
beyond the confines of academic HSTM groups.
Whether or not you can attend the workshop, I would be very
grateful if you could send me any views you have on these
documents, e.g. improvements, refinements, corrections, and in
particular whether in their current form they are compatible with
your current teaching practices in HSTM.
best wishes to all,
Graeme Gooday
