'Is commercial science reported fairly?'
Members of this list might be interested in an event being run under the
Royal Society of Arts' 'Science, Citizenship and the Market' project, which
is exploring the relationships between science in the commercial sector and
its many publics, drawing inspiration from sociological approaches to
science. It is a collaboration between the RSA and the Department of
Science & Technology Studies at UCL, and brings together many different
professions from science-based industries and academics and policy-makers
interested in the social dimensions of science, industry and innovation.
During the day, we aim to draw on the expertise and experience of the
participants to explore questions such as:
Whom do the media serve when reporting scientific businesses?
Do the media behave as judge and jury when science becomes a public issue?
Do business journalists and science journalists report science differently?
Can the media make or break a scientific product?
How has coverage of science news been shaped by corporate PR?
The day is geared towards discussion and fresh thinking rather than formal
presentations of papers.
The seminar is small and is therefore, necessarily, not an open meeting.
However, if you have a special interest or expertise in the subject area,
the organisers (Jane Gregory, Jon Agar and Simon Lock) would like to hear
from you. They can be contacted via Simon Lock on 020 7679 2299 or
[log in to unmask]
The seminar will be held at the RSA on December 18th, and will run from
10am to 4.30pm.
