Life, The Universe and Almost Everything:
The Value of Adults Learning in Science
NIACE (The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education)
National Conference
on Thursday 3 October 2002
at The Royal Institution, Albermarle Street, London W1
Science is all about life and the world around us, but many adults feel
learning about science subjects is not for them. Knowledge about science
and technology is important to enable everyone to understand and
participate in critical debates for our future. Following publication of
NIACE’s policy paper, this conference aims to promote wider participation
in science subjects and to share examples of some user-friendly programmes
aimed especially at adult learners. Has the current Science Year made a
difference and how can we build on it? Key speaker Susan Greenfield,
Director of the Royal Institution is committed to improving public access
to science knowledge.
This conference will:
· examine the role of the education system in providing better
learning opportunities for adults in science-related subjects;
· raise the awareness of the need to develop wider provision for more
and different learners;
· exemplify case studies of good practice;
· celebrate NIACE ‘Sign Up Now’ grant awards to family / group
science projects which develop better learning opportunities.
The conference is aimed at:
· practitioners of adult learning in a wide range of settings,
including community learning, further and higher education, museums and
libraries;
· members of professional bodies with an interest in science
education;
· policy makers.
