CENTRE FOR HISTORY & CULTURAL STUDIES OF SCIENCE
SCHOOL OF HISTORY
UNIVERSITY OF KENT AT CANTERBURY
PhD Studentships
Applications are invited for two AHRB-funded full time PhD
studentships (three years). One studentship will focus on
the theme of 'The Imperial Liners (1840-1914): a Cultural
History' and the other on 'The Decline and Fall of the
Merchant Sailing Ship (1845-1926)'. Both topics relate
closely to an AHRB large grant project entitled 'The Ocean
Steamship: A Cultural History of Victorian Maritime Power
1850-1914' directed by Professor Crosbie Smith at the
University of Kent. The project has also strong links with
the University of Liverpool (Dr William Ashworth) and the
University of Aberdeen (Dr Ben Marsden). The
historiographical emphasis of the project as a whole is on
the cultural shaping of technological practices rather than
on traditional economic or business history.
AHRB studentship eligibility criteria apply (e.g.
candidates should normally have, or be studying for, a
Master's degree with the expectation of completing the
Master's degree prior to commencement of the PhD).
Applications from candidates with web authoring experience
(e.g. Dreamweaver) and/or database skills will be
especially welcome.
Please send a CV, with two letters of academic reference and
a research proposal (up to 500 words and centred on one or
other of the above topics), to Professor Crosbie Smith,
Ocean Project Director, School of History, Rutherford
College, University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NX.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Smith
(email [log in to unmask]) or to Dr Ian Higginson, Assistant
Director (email [log in to unmask]).
Closing date: Friday 12 July 2002.
The University of Kent is committed to implementing an equal
opportunities policy.
