Special seminar
On Friday 24th May at 2pm in Seminar Room 2, HPS Department, Cambridge
University.
David P. Miller (School of Science & Technology Studies, The University of
New South Wales) will be speaking on:
"The Natural Philosopher as Icon: The Production of Henry Cavendish in
Mid-Nineteenth-Century Britain".
Abstract
This paper discusses the great symbolic importance that Henry Cavendish
(1731-1810) had in Victorian scientific culture. His work and his
'character' were closely related by those who held him up as an icon.
Bouncing off Mertonian and Shapinian analyses of Cavendish's character and
its significance, I emphasize the local production of Cavendish within early
Victorian scientific culture and through the 'water controversy' in
particular.
Everyone is welcome
