I would like to draw colleagues' attention to the scheme for
postdoctoral funding operated by the Irish Research Council for
Humanities and Social Sciences.
The competition is open to ALL nationalities, and offers funding for one
or two year fellowships. Applicants must have received their doctorate
within the last five years and not hold a permanent academic job
(doctorates must be completed, including viva, by 1st April 2003).
Applicants need to have a letter of invitation from a university in the
Republic of Ireland inviting them to hold their fellowship at that
institution. The closing date is January 13th 2003, for full details see
www.irchss.ie/postdoc0304.htm
(The same organisation also offers postgraduate funding for PhDs, for EU
nationals, closing date 2 March 2003, see
www.irchss.ie/postgrad0304.html)
History of Science certainly falls within the remit of these awards -
here at Galway, we currently have one postdoc funded through this
scheme. Galway is the only university in the Irish republic with a
permanent staff member specialising in the history of science, and we
would welcome the opportunity to expand our History of Science interests
by hosting more IRCHSS postdocs.
Interested applicants should read the material available from the
IRCHSS, and are welcome to discuss with me the possibility of being
hosted at Galway. It would be advisable to be well advanced with the
application procedure before the Christmas break.
