EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT THE
BECKMAN CENTER FOR THE HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY
STAFF HistorianS. The Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry is seeking applications for two full-time staff historian positions. The Beckman Center is the historical and educational unit of the Chemical Heritage Foundation, which also includes the Othmer Library of Chemical History. Both the Beckman Center and the Othmer Library are located within the Chemical Heritage Foundation's facility adjacent to Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia.
The mission of the Beckman Center is to preserve, record, promote, and utilize the history and heritage of the chemical and molecular sciences, technologies, and associated industries, so that; An active research community studies and publishes on this history; Diverse audiences gain an understanding of the role that this history has played in the creation of the modern world, and in their daily lives; Professional communities gain a deeper appreciation of their heritage; The understanding of science and technology, especially its place in society and history, is improved across the educational spectrum, in both formal and informal learning contexts.
One of the staff historian positions will carry with it an emphasis on educational programming. Applicants should have a significant interest in creating innovative resources for integrating the history of the chemical and molecular sciences, technologies, and allied industries into both science and history instruction across the K-12 and undergraduate levels.
The other staff historian position will carry with it an emphasis on oral history. Applicants should have a significant interest in the conduct, processing, and use of oral histories of significant individuals from the broad communities associated with the chemical and molecular sciences, technologies, and allied industries.
The staff historians will also help create exhibits, publications and other projects; conduct research; develop Web-based resources; further the Center's Oral History Program; respond to inquiries arising from the foundation's staff and the public; provide support for conferences and events; and address various administrative tasks.
The successful candidate should be able to write for multiple audiences, provide project coordination, and have significant graduate education (up to and including a Ph.D.) in history, STS (Science, Technology, and Society), or Science Studies. Specialization in the history of science, technology, or business is highly desirable. Further, a demonstrable interest in, and or experience with, either of the two emphases described above is preferable. Salary is competitive and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
