The lecture will take place on Tuesday February 26, at 5.00 pm in Lecture
Theatre 1, Mill Lane, Cambridge.
The Joseph Needham Lecture series is organised by the Needham Research
Institute, Cambridge, with the support of Gonville and Caius College. Its
aim is to bring to Cambridge distinguished scholars to speak on topics
broadly connected with the life's work of Joseph Needham (1900-1995), author
and founder of the Science and Civilisation in China series.
Professor Liu is a leading figure in the intellectual and organisational
life of the history of science in China. His published work in Chinese and
English ranges from the history of Chinese mathematics to the role in the
historiography of science of the "Needham problem" [why did pre-modern
China's later scientific and technical progress not match the promise of its
earlier achievements. Professor Liu is also chair of the organising
committee for the next International Congress of the History of Science,
which will take place in Beijing in 2005.
