undisciplined?! A SYMPOSIUM
The liminal and fragile state of
interdisciplinarity is to be sustained only
by adopting the most active and aggressive
means; by resolving, not just to be
interdisciplinary, but actively to oppose
disciplinary complacencies. To be, in a
word, "antidisciplinary." (Paul Strohm)
Is interdisciplinarity alive of dead? Was it ever more than
multidisciplinarity? Is antidisciplinarity the way forward? Are the
financial and political constraints upon the university squeezing out
innovation? Intended for scholars at all stages, this is a forum inviting
the new generation of medievalists to present their views of our
disciplinary structure.
HOW DOES YOUR WORK ENGAGE WITH THESE ISSUES?
the politics of discipline; resisting the academy; theory and practice;
shifting the boundaries; being multidisciplinary; antidisciplinarity.
This is the first part of a joint venture between Oxford University, UK,
and Canterbury Centre for Medieval & Tudor Studies, University of Kent,
UK. We propose to continue the discussions at a conference in
spring/summer 2003, with the intention of publishing the proceedings.
