THE CONGRESS
In view of the increasing range and variety of scholarship on music, the
17th Congress of the IMS presents eight symposia on broad themes, which
replace the single theme and related round-tables of previous
Congresses. Each symposium will include multiple sessions on themes
determined by the proposals received, with papers read in English,
French, German, Italian or Spanish. Since the eight symposia take place
simultaneously on all days of the Congress, often in the same rooms,
listeners may follow a single symposium theme throughout the week or
select papers or sessions in different symposia. The symposium themes
are: 1. Hearing - Performing - Writing, 2. The Dynamics of Change in
Music, 3. Who Owns Music?, 4. Musica Belgica, 5. Musical Migrations, 6.
Form and Invention, 7. Instruments of Music, and 8. Sources. The
Congress will also include daily carillon recitals and evening concerts
by Belgian performing ensembles. The program, except for the
opening ceremony and concerts, but including the papers of the Cantus
Planus study group, can be viewed at the Congress website
<http://millennium.arts.kuleuven.ac.be/ims2002/> or obtained on
request from Mr. Patrick Lenaers, Local Arrangements Committee, Alamire
Foundation, Mgr. Ladeuzeplein 21, B-3000 Leuven, Belgium, tel. (32-16)

THE LOCATION
Leuven is about 24 km. east of Brussels and 16 km. from Brussels'
airport; the train trip from the airport, with one change of station,
takes 60-90 minutes, however. High-speed trains from Amsterdam, London,
and Paris go to Brussels; the slower train from Cologne,
Germany, takes about 3 hours. The Congress site is a 10-15 minute walk
from the Leuven train station. The 'old town' of Leuven is entirely
negotiable on foot and is filled with cafes and restaurants of every
kind.
REGISTRATION AND ACCOMMODATIONS
Now possible via the Congress website or by writing to
Patrick Lenaers. Members of the IMS and International Council for
Traditional Music pay a reduced registration fee, as do students. To
encourage student participation and make the Congress more accessible to
scholars from outside Europe and North America, dormitory rooms are
available at 17-24 euros a night for adults, 12 euros a night for
students (one euro = 88-90 US cents) and a cafeteria meal plan for 52
euros covers all hot meals at noon on six days (except Sunday). Hotel
prices begin at 55 euros per night for a single room. Please *request
your hotel on the registration form* and NOT by calling the hotel and
also indicate 'smoking' or 'non-smoking' visibly on the form. Also
check the location of the hotel with respect to the Congress as well
as transportation possibilities and their costs [note that this
information is not yet on the website, but Barbara Haggh has maps and can
offer some advice]; some hotels are outside the Leuven town center and
some are in Brussels. Leuven is a very pleasant town for pedestrians,
especially in the summer, and the Sencie Instituut is air-conditioned, has
windows that open as well, and has elevators with enough space for
wheelchairs.
THE STUDENT HELPER PROGRAM
Students or very recent Ph.Ds. willing to assist with registration,
audio-visual equipment, and at the information desk are needed and will
not have to pay the registration fee. Application forms are available on
the Congress website. Preference will be given to students who speak two
or more of the five IMS languages, Russian or Chinese fluently.

If you have not done so, please send a list of the audiovisual materials
required for your paper to Patrick Lenaers.
MAKING EURO-ASSISTANCE DONATIONS
To encourage and promote the scholarly study of music in the widest
context of international participation and exchange and to take
advantage of Leuven's location and lower cost of living, the program
committee sought and received an unprecedented number of outstanding
proposals from scholars outside western Europe and north America. Yet
more recently, grants for international societies and projects in the
humanities without a local or national base, and for travel and lodging
in particular, have evaporated. (The fall of the Berlin Wall is by now
'old news'.)
In consequence, the Directorium of the International Musicological
Society has launched an international appeal for individual or group
donations, which are tax-deductible if sent to the appropriate national
society, to provide meals and lodging for up to 80 speakers who reside
in countries with currency restrictions or very low per capita incomes.
Since a donation of 12 euros provides one night of lodging for a student,
and a donation of 391 euros pays for the entire week-long stay of one
adult non-IMS member, even small donations will determine whether a
speaker can attend or not. Contributions may be sent to the IMS in care of
the American Musicological Society *by 29 March*, at 201 South 34th
Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6313, made out to AMS/IMS and marked 'IMS
2002 Euro-Assistance Fund' or directly to the Office of the Treasurer,
Ms. Madeleine Regli, International Musicological Society, Bank Sarasin &
Cie., P.O.B. 4055, CH-4002 Basle, Switzerland, or (for VISA or MasterCard
orders) by fax to Ms. Regli at (41-61) 277-7518, again *by 29 March*. The
entire text of the appeal, with economic data from the pertinent
countries, can be read at the IMS website, at <http://www.ims-online.ch>,
in English, French, and German. Donors who wish to be listed will be
acknowledged in the program book.
The IMS is particularly grateful to the American Musicological Society
for supporting this initiative.
APPLICATION FOR AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE IMS 2002 EURO-ASSISTANCE FUNDS

registered at a university in spring 2002, have received the Ph.D. or an
