Subject: Philip Brett (1937-2002)
I very much regret to share the news that Philip Brett died on Wednesday,
October 16, at 1:00 a.m., one day before his 65th birthday. His ashes will
be placed in the memorial garden at Horsham St. Faith's crematorium in
Norfolk, England, in late November by his partner, George Haggerty.
Several memorial concerts at the University of California at Berkeley and
at UCLA are being planned.
George has asked that anyone who wishes to make a charitable donation in
Philip's name may do so by making a contribution to the Philip Brett
Award, which is sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Study Group of the
American Musicological Society. According to George, "Philip was himself
very proud of this award and honored to be named as its inspiration."
Checks should be sent to the Society with "Philip Brett Award" in the memo
line.
Philip was, in my estimation, that rare musicologist who mentored graduate
and undergraduate students with profound care and concern, thereby
deepening their intellectual lives and careers; served as a colleague of
intellectual breadth and distinction in several fields from text criticism
to gay and lesbian studies; believed in the importance of translating the
printed page into breathing, vital music; and improved the world around
him, including the American Musicological Society, with his insights and
passions.
