CALL FOR PAPERS
A proposed Special Session for MLA 2002, in NYC
"Magical Aesthetics in Renaissance England"
This panel will discuss the instrumental ends, or transitive effects, of
Renaissance aesthetic strategies and the relationship of those strategies
to the practices of early modern magic. We will come to this discussion
from multiple avenues of inquiry; our approaches may include, but
certainly need not be limited to, the following:
-- new historical examinations of the nexus connecting literature or
theater to magic in early modern England
-- new theoretical assessments of magical discourses
-- the function of the representation of magic in particular literary or
theatrical texts
-- poets in juxtaposition to magicians, in literary representation and/or
as career servants to patrons
-- Kant and Lukacs, or the problem of Renaissance aesthetics after new
historicism
-- (and so on...)
