oral history in museums
Thursday 9 May 2002
Snibston Discovery Park, Coalville, Leicestershire
9:30am - 4pm
Oral evidence is becoming an increasingly important feature of many a
museum's repertoire. The recording of people's unique memories and
experiences provides much needed information about 20th century lives that
would otherwise be lost. Edited sound and transcribed extracts can bring
displays to life and help shed light on competing histories.
This one day event, organised jointly by the East Midlands Oral History
Archive (EMOHA) and Snibston Discovery Park, will introduce you to: what
oral history is and what it can offer museums; a basic guide to conducting
your own oral history interviews; and a series of three case studies
focusing on funding, reminiscence with objects, and the work of a museum
oral history project. Follow-up training and support can be provided, free
of charge, by EMOHA.
There is no charge for the day's events, but if you want lunch a simple
buffet is being provided at just £6 a head.
