IBSS Search Enhancements
------------------------
We are pleased to announce that from Monday 29th April, the search
interface to the BIDS IBSS Online service will be enhanced to allow the
use of natural language operators.
In other words, it will be possible to use the words AND, OR and NOT in
search phrases in both the subject and author search fields. These can
be used as alternatives to the current symbolic operators (& , -) which
will continue to be supported.
It does mean that anyone entering a search phrase with the words AND, OR
or NOT in it will see different behaviour when compared with the current
service. For example on the current service, the search phrase
competition and economic growth
will look for records with exactly that phrase.
After the release, the same search will look for the terms 'competition'
and 'economic growth' anywhere in the title or keywords fields, and will
thus get many more hits.
If the exact phrase is actually required, it will become necessary to
surround the phrase in double quotes:
"competition and economic growth"
Although this change may inconvenience a few users until they are used
to the change, we believe the majority will find it of great benefit,
and brings it into line with popular search engines etc.
