I don't think that Chartering is only for the Academic/Public Librarian. I
work for one of the Research Councils and that makes me
Government/Corporate. Chartership has always been looked upon here as a
good thing -- a recognition of excellence and dedication to the profession.
Those of us who have not yet Chartered have been urged to do so and have
been given help both with time and training. I also take exception to the
idea that two different or separate qualifications are needed. They aren't.

Subject: Re: Chartering
All the correspondence on the benefits or not of chartering surely underline
ever more clearly that there is an apparently unbridgeable gulf between the
perceptions of the world of academic & public librarianship and that of
commercial information acience. Yes, we are all one organisation now, and
yes,
we are all (we hope) working towards a common goal of excellence in
information
& library science - but we simply can't pretend these two disparate stances
do
not exist. I very much hope that CILIP will be brave enough to meet this
head-on, and work towards offering members (and employers) the
qualifications
appropriate to their elective areas of work - even if it should prove
necessary
to offer two separate types of qualification for the commercial and the
non-commercial worlds. It takes a lot of courage - I hope CILIP has the
will to
face this reality.
