Persian and Arabic lithographed books from the Indian subcontinent and Iran
Dear list members,
Mr. Gholam Reza Sheikhan, an Iranian bookdealer based in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands, with whom I have had regular contacts for many years, has
brought together a collection of c. 2,000 nineteenth and early
twentieth-century lithographed books, mainly from the Indian subcontinent
and Iran. Circa eighty percent of this collection is in Persian or Arabic,
the remainder being in languages like Pashto, Urdu and Turkic languages.
Subjects vary between Islam and Islamic law, history, medicine and
literature.
Some of the highlights of this collection are an illustrated Shahnamah,
published Bombay 1276; an illustrated Yusuf wa Zulaykha, Tehran 1299; a
'Gulistan ba taswir', Lucknow 1867; a Makhzan al-adwiyah by Sayyid Muh.
Husayn al-'Alawi Shirazi, published Lucknow 1913; and a Mathnawi by Jalal
al-Din Rumi, Tehran 1320.
Mr. Sheikhan should like to see this collection preserved in its entirety,
preferably in an academic library. Colleagues who are interested in
acquiring this collection should contact Mr. Sheikhan by e-mail in order to
obtain more detailed information: [log in to unmask]
I have to stress most emphatically that I myself have no interest in the
matter, financially or otherwise.
Best regards,
Dr. Arnoud Vrolijk
