Dear Colleagues,
New publication on the Arabic novel in Algeria. Politics, language and
gender in the Algerian Arabic novel, by Debbie Cox. Lewiston: The Edwin
Mellen Press, 2002 (North African Studies, no. 2). ISBN: 0773471243
This book focuses on novels by three major Algerian authors, Abdelhamid
Benhadouga, al-Tahar Wattar and Rachid Boudjedra, during the period
1972-1988. It investigates their attempts to negotiate the constraints
arising from authoritarian rule and restrictive ideologies of language and
gender. This is the first extended study of Algeria's post-independence
Arabic literature in English. It provides an alternative view which will be
of relevance to those studying French-language North African literature as
well as those more familiar with Arabic literary writing from the eastern
part of the Arab world. Its detailed examination of the arena of language
and identity contributes to an understanding of Algeria's current conflict
and the legacy of colonial rule.
