DESIGN FOR ACCESS - BE READY FOR 2004
CILIP workshop, 30 May, London
The final stage of the Disability Discrimination Act comes into force in
2004. By then libraries and information centres must be fully accessible to
all disabled people. In Britain there are 10 million people with mobility
difficulties, 7 million who have impaired hearing, and 2 million who are
visually impaired. The way we design and structure the built environment,
and the way we present printed and web-based material, can increase or
reduce the difficulties they encounter.
This seminar looks at the needs of people with motor or sensory impairments.
It aims to ensure that the physical environment of libraries complies with
the DDA and the particular regulations which libraries must adhere to. It
complements The Enabling Library workshop, and looks at some examples of
good practice, but makes no attempt to consider service delivery.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The day is aimed at anyone involved in designing new libraries,
re-furbishing existing ones or buying new furniture and fittings, and at
staff who work with architects, designers or suppliers, rather than those
who deliver services directly. People involved in corporate design of
printed and web-based services and estates managers whose design and
purchasing decisions might restrict a library's ability to meet the access
needs of disabled people would also find this event useful.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* explored the contract management life cycle
* discovered how to turn around a contract that is not adding value
* looked at contract management styles
* considered the impact of change in relation to contract management
* explored the importance of compliance monitoring and measuring performance
throughout the life span of a contract
* looked at the impact of negotiation skills and communication skills on the
successful completion of a contract
This is a participative course and will involve some simple case studies.
By the end of the day participants will have considered:
* how to meet the needs of motor and sensory impaired people in ways which
do not enhance access for one group whilst simultaneously reducing it for
another
* why access should be considered at the start of the design process
* key elements of the Building Regulations Part M
* how to undertake an access audit, how inclusive design benefits all
service users.
