Thanks for the replies- lis-medical a helpful and imaginative lot, as
always!
They included:
Wise comments:
'Any implements you make freely available will go - guaranteed!'
Current strategies in use:
* Giving away ones you can get hold of free (drug reps provide lots,
or the cheap nasty ones charities send)
* Producing some with your logo/url and giving them to readers as a
way of marketing the library services (not that expensive, apparently).
* Taping product security tags onto the pens (as at the National
Lottery Stand at Tesco)
* Using small pencils rather than pens as less desirable to take (as
at Ikea)
Ideas:
* Selling small pencils as they are cheaper, and providing
counter-mounted sharpeners for them.
* Don't provide anything, and perhaps they'll get the message.
* How about attaching pens to large pieces of wood -as per some hotels
with room keys!!
* Memory training for readers so they can remember the shelfmark in
the time taken between catalogue and shelf(! )
* What's really needed is a little biro that is made in such a way as
to appear it is leaking ink - that way no-one but an idiot would put it in
their pocket.
