Westlakes Research Institute, located on the western edge of the English
Lake District, combines academic provision at postgraduate level with
commercial activities in two major thematic areas, Healthcare Informatics
and Environmental Sciences.
In order to extend our reseach base in Healthcare Informatics and develop an
MSc programme in this area, we wish to make a senior level appointment to
complement our existing strengths in medical statistics, epidemiology, and
genetics. We anticipate increasing overlap with the environmental sciences
thematic area with emerging opportunities in the environment / healthcare
interface. A new Department of Healthcare Informatics will be formed and,
together with the Department of Occupational Health & Medical Statistics and
the Department of Genetics will form one of two major Divisions within the
Institute.
We believe the area of Healthcare Informatics is likely to grow dramatically
during the next few years and a significant part of the role will be to
build and engage with a network of healthcare professionals in Northern
Cumbria and to interact with other providers in the North Western Health
Region. Westlakes already has strong links with the local Healthcare
community through the North Cumbria Community Genetics project and through
collaborative interactions with the West Cumbria Primary Healthcare Trust
and the Cumbria Research Network. We have formal accreditation and
collaborations with the Universities of Newcastle and Manchester and
collaborate with other HE providers in Cumbria; our trading arm has
contracts with a number of major clients for the provision of occupational
health and cytogenetic services.
The successful candidate will need good communication and networking skills
and possess management experience as well as professional expertise in some
area of Healthcare Informatics. Some experience of delivering postgraduate
training would be an advantage and it is important that the successful
candidate is keen to engage in research and seek external grant funding for
the R&D programme that will inform the postgraduate teaching and underpin
the business activities of the Institute. The person appointed will work
with the heads of BioMedical Statistics and of Genetics to establish WRI as
a centre of excellence for research and training in Healthcare Informatics
and as a key node in an extended network of healthcare providers in North
Cumbria.
Salary will be commensurate with experience and in the professorial range.
