Some months ago I asked if anyone knew of a good inexpensive scanning
programme that could cope with boxes and columns. The only reply was a
request to pass on any results to the list.
I have now discovered ABBYY Finereader. Version 6 is newly out and is
expensive but Version 5 is good and can be bought from net suppliers like
Jungle for around 30 pounds. However Version 4 is being given away free
with PC Pro (3.50 pounds) this month with a tear-off slip to get more discs.
You have to go on-line to get a registration number.
Version 4 works through the scanning program that comes with your scanner
and I was impressed with results on a form with various sized boxes. It
saved as a Word doc and you could change the typing and layout within boxes.
There were only minor format errors eg a long line instead or 2 short one
and a border missing off one side of box, that were easily fixed.
It apparently can also do other languages
