Hi
There was discussion on this back in June 2000. The lead email stated:
Has anyone read "The Informationist: A New Health Profession?" editorial in
the June 20th issue of Annals of Internal Medicine by Frank Davidoff Valerie
Florance? It seems to be to be advocating a new profession when Medical
Librarians already do this type of work. Can we discuss it on the list?
Readers of LIS-MEDICAL might want to back track on this discussion as
background =assuming its still available in the archives.

Subject: The future librarian in healthcare?
This seemed an interesting article - with a spin on the clinical librarian
role
HOW TECHNOLOGY COULD CHANGE THE HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE
A future healthcare workforce could include informationists, a new type of
librarian skilled in retrieving information for clinical care; personal
health advocates and advisers who help consumers to find out more about
their care and telemedicine practitioners, presenters, and consultants who
specialise in delivering healthcare at a distance. The new roles are
described in a paper by Daniel Masys, director of bioinformatics at the
University of California San Diego in a paper in the current issue of Health
Affairs http://www.healthaffairs.org
