This list is amazing! On a Monday morning (bound to be a busy time), I have
already had a range of really useful replies, so I'm now sorted!
I'm looking forward to seeing enquirer instead of it being one of those
heart sink moments..
I've summarised the replies below (and some more resources I found by
browsing on from them), in case of interest to anyone else.
Many thanks to everyone for their swift and useful replies.

SURVEYS
See http://www.scotland.gov.uk/cru/kd01/purple/panhs-00.asp for details of a
survey into public views of the NHS in Scotland.
There has been a programme of national patient surveys since 1998 as
follows:
1998-9 GP services
1999-2000 CHD services
2001-2 Acute inpatient services, cancer services, and re-run of GP services
A number of organisations have contracts to run NHS surveys (see
http://www.nhssurveys.org/ )
A national advice centre for the NHS surveys programme is operated by the
Picker Institute ( http://www.pickereurope.org/ ) eg
http://www.pickereurope.org/publications/nhs_survey.htm
Some overlap with The National Survey of NHS Patients.

KPMG recently did a survey on what patients thinks of the NHS
http://www.kpmgconsulting.co.uk/research/reports/ps_nhs2002.html
Some things maybe not published centrally (messages from NHS librarians)?
'The NHS did a massive patient survey, the results of which were published
earlier this year, we have been given the results relating to our hospital
but I don't know whether they are kept centally. It might be related to
CHI'.
'Down in the south West in May 2000 we did a consultation about 'the
National Plan for the New NHS'. I'm not sure if this was a national
initiative or just a South West one but I spent a Saturday morning outside
Safeways in Totnes apprehending members of the public and trying to find out
what they wanted from the NHS. I have got one report produced by the
(former) NHS Executive South West in July 2000.'
Another person also remembered the big survey I half remembered- 'There was
- I cannot remember what it was called, but I remember having piles of cards
to give out with a very short deadline. This was before I moved to The
North, so must have been the summer of 2000, I think?'
