The Research Council for Complementary Medicine
Indexer Required
The Research Council for Complementary Medicine (RCCM) was founded in 1983
by a group of enthusiastic practitioners and researchers from both
alternative and orthodox medicine. One of our aims is to develop and extend
the evidence base for complementary medicine in order to provide
practitioners and patients with appropriate information about the effects of
treatments.
Background:
CISCOM (Centralised Information Service for Complementary Medicine) is a
specialist database containing over 82,500 records pertaining to
complementary medicine from Medline, AMED, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Cochrane as
well as individually hand-searched journals. All these databases use their
own in-house thesauri and use a variety of indexing terms for clinical
terminology and complementary medicine. These indexing terms can be
inadequate for complementary medicine and can present difficulty and
complexity when searching. To overcome this problem, a specialist CISCOM
thesaurus has recently been constructed specifically for complementary
medicine.
The Task:
All records need to be re-indexed using the CISCOM thesaurus. We have
developed clear guidelines to assist with this procedure. Each record will
need to be examined and assigned the most appropriate keywords from the
thesaurus that describe the article. Each record also needs to be assigned
an RCCM type (eg RCT, systematic review, survey etc). The purpose behind the
indexing procedure is to make the database as user-friendly as possible and
to aid the searcher in retrieving research which matches his/her needs as
precisely as possible.
The Person:
We are looking for someone who has:
Experience in searching databases (preferably medical)
Understanding of indexing
Familiarity with Complementary Medicine (desirable)
Training will be provided.
