interest.

Subject: Call 314180: Indexing
Dear Fiona,
Your comments about the older citations being added recently to MEDLINE was
received at the NLM. As you suspect, the NLM has been adding back files,
and also adding citations from an indexing backlog. The backlog includes
nursing journal citations that were from journals previously indexed for the
NLM by the American Journal of Nursing Company, for example. When the
indexing relationship ended, some journals were not indexed for awhile. The
same is true of dental journals (previously indexed for the NLM by the
American Dental Association). Then, too, the NLM has added citations to
MEDLINE that previously were in the separate POPLINE database or
BIOETHICSLINE. As MEDLINE has become much broader in scope, unique citations
from these other databases are now added.
In the future, the NLM will be doing more of the indexing as the journals
are received, and the Index Section staff do not anticipate backlogs like
this from nursing journals or dental journals. But there may be more
journals, like the journal _Health Communication_ and the _Journal of Health
Communication_, which the NLM recently added to the list of indexed
journals, that are retrospectively indexed.
I hope this is helpful.
Sincerely yours,
Marcia Zorn, Reference Staff
National Library of Medicine
