Dear Sara
We as knowledge and information staff are an integral
part of a Clinical Governance Department that also has
a Resource Centre, a Clinical Effectivenes team,
Evidence-based Practice staff and R&D staff. There are
enormous benefits to this configuration (not the least
of which is our own personal development!), it enables
us to contribute directly to quality improvement and
means that we can link up cross-functionally to
complement each others' work. However, we are lucky in
that our area of expertise did not exist within the
Trust before it was introduced to what was then an
audit and research department. On the other hand as
would be the case with any new configurations or
cross-functional integration we have also had to adopt
flexible attitudes and overcome the barriers of
resistance to change, threats to empires and different
ways of working. While we're still working at it and
have had to spend time on the basics such as a shared
ethos, we believe that we can ultimately have (or are
striving to have!) a greater impact on patient care. I
would say that the Clinical Governance agenda offers a
fantastic opportunity to argue that at the end of the
day for continuous quality improvement practitioners
need to practice reflectively, looking at their
practice in terms of what is 'best' practice, wherever
that knowledge comes from it underpins and enhances
their work. Library and information services therefore
can aid in the sharing and utilisation of that
knowledge. Some simple examples for you to throw into
the pot if you want are that in an integrated service
staff can analyse literature search requests to
highlight pieces of research that may otherwise have
slipped through the governance framework and that with
their knowledge of effective dissemination techniques
library and information staff can aid in the process
of ensuring the 'loop' is closed etc etc. I think if
perhaps you found a Clinical Governance champion and
presented some concrete examples of the way you could
add value that may be a start. I better stop rambling
now otherwise I'll have nothing left to say when I
present my paper on this at Edinburgh. Can't you tell
I get quite enthused about this? I'm sure it's not
much help but if you want any further info to add fuel
to your fire then please contact us. Good luck.(I
brought a walkman in for the match!!)
