Apologies for crossposting

Summary of latest completed National Library of Medicine Technical Bulletin
below, from my colleague Stephanie Brockhouse. Full Bulletin via
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/ma02/ma02_issue_cover.html.

More points of interest than usual, at least to me. Hope will be to others.

What do you think of the PubMed tutorial, by the way? I find its useful in
that its on the PubMed site, and kept more up-to-date than the alternative
ones. But a bit complex to navigate for anyone not very into web use, and
needs Flash...

Technical Bulletin 325 - March -April 2002

The National Library of Medicine has now released the PubMed text version
created specifically for users who require adaptive equipment to access the
Web and use PubMed. The text version can be accessed from the PubMed
sidebar or directly at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/queryd.fcgi

New version of Gateway released

A new version of Gateway has recently been released with a number of
changes. Details of these changes can be found on the What's New Gateway
sidebar.

New NLM Classification numbers added

Since the publication of the National Library of Medicine Classification in
2000 the following recent additions have been made:-

In the main schedule at WA 487.5, add:
                                  .H4 Health Personnel

In the index under Health Personnel, add:
Accidents in the provision of health care
WA 487.5.H4

WG 141.5.M2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging

In the main schedule at WG 141.5, add:
                                  .M2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging

In the index under Magnetic Resonance Imaging, add:

disease, with
the disease, organ, or region, e.g., in
                                  Cardiovascular Diseases WG 141.5.M2

In the index under Cardiovascular System, add:
                                  Magnetic Resonance Imaging WG 141.5.M2

A further NLM Gateway release

A further Gateway release has recently taken place and details of the latest
changes can also be found on the Gateway sidebar under the What's New
heading.

Briefly the changes include additional search fields being displayed now the
results are retrieved from the PubMed XML output. Other changes relate
mainly to window size, cursor positioning and a name change for DIRLINE.

Why citations to older articles may display before more recent ones in
PubMed

Following a number of enquiries regarding the above NLM have explained that
PubMed's Entrez date, and when citations are added to the database,
influences order of display.

PubMed results are initially displayed in reverse chronological order of the
Entrez date ie. last in, first out. If required, search results can be
sorted by publication date using the system Sort feature.

Citations are usually added to PubMed soon after publication although this
is not always the case. In certain circumstances the Entrez date for older
citations is noticeably more recent than the publication date.

Patient Education Handouts in MEDLINE/PubMed

Some journals have begun publishing summaries intended for patients or the
lay public to explain a procedure or condition, or perhaps summarize or
comment on articles that report scientific or medical findings in the same
issue. These summaries are designed for physicians to share with patients
or to assist physicians in talking to patients. Starting in 2002 patient
summaries are indexed with the new Publication Type - Patient Education
Handout.

For handouts that summarize other articles NLM have now created links,
similar to "comment" links, between the Patient Education Handout citations
and the citations to the full articles that they summarize. The links will
appear in PubMed with the text "Summary for Patients In" on the original
article citation, and "Original Report In" on the patient handout citation.

CCRIS, ChemIDplus, DIRLINE, Gene-TOX,HSDB. and TOXLINE Special now
distributed to licensees in XML format

The National Library of Medicine has announced the distribution of CCRIS,
ChemIDplus, DIRLINE, Gene-TOX, HSDB and TOXLINE Special in XML format to
NLM's licensees. NLM will continue to distribute CCRIS, Gene-Tox and HSDB
in the soon-to-be-discontinued ASCII format for several more months as some
licensees make the transition to XML. Fact sheets for these databases are
available from the NLM website.

CCRIS, ChemIDplus, Gene-TOX, HSDB and TOXLINE Special may be searched free
of charge at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/ and DIRLINE may also be search at no
charge at http://dirline.nlm.nih.gov/ as well as through the NLM Gateway.

new UMLS Knowledge Source server available

Sources (2002AA) and the new UMLS Knowledge Source server are available at
