We were visited but not told that we would be. A general email told
us they were on site and if they spoke to us to answer but not approach.
They came into the library being shown round by the new head of
Clinical Governance who had not himself visited the library as far as I know
and if he had he had not come and seen me.
They walked in and out without being introduced to me. In fact I got
up from my office chair to see who had come in and was told it was them by
someone else as they had already left. A one second visit!.
I was not asked for any information about the visit in advance and
did not know that it was happening until the day they were walking round.
Our mention in the report.
"5.48 There are no internet facilities on wards and other clinical
areas. staff have access to the library, which has internet access. There
are also facilities in the education centre. However , many staff have
commented that the education centre has been and remains dominated by
medical staff to the exclusion of others."
Since the Library for the last year has been situated in the
Education Centre we do not know if that includes us but can not believe so
since we are used more by nurses, physios etc than by doctors and
consultants. Our internet connection is heavily used at lunchtime by hotmail
enthusiasts most of them not doctors. The internet facilities in the
Education Centre other than one computer in the Postgraduate Office and a
room with 8 computers only for Imperial College Medical Students are in fact
in the Library so we seem to be talking about the same facilities twice.
Now we have been doing formal advertised weekly training of groups
and individuals on searching the Internet and the medical databases for over
three years for all trust staff and the mention we got for this was the
Literature searching as well as one to one tuition is included in the
evidence based evidence/ clinical audit area with no mention of the Library
having anything to do with it.
Under "Use of Information" it was said that "All IT training is
currently carried out by two staff in the trust with no mention of the
training in computer use that the Library does and by that I mean Microsoft
Office Powerpoint etc. which they use on our computers and we teach them
informally how to use.
My feeling was that we were not really thought of as important by
both our Trust or CHI. If we had known in advance or even been interviewed
we could have put forward the contribution that we were making to the trust
and even highlighted things that we could do or improve. It is where
criticism has been made that money and support is likely to follow.
