*** Number and quality of applications received ***
RIWA evaluation committee was pleased by the overall quality of
applications received, particularly given that the health information
community is in the early stages of developing its evidence base.
We believe this bodes well for the future of evidence based library
and information science.
This year seven applications were received (Midlands - 2; North
West - 1; Scotland - 2; South West - 1; Yorkshire - 1) and focused
in two main areas: aspects of library and information provision or
evidence based librarianship, and included: carer information
needs; cost effectiveness of information provision; learning resource
provision; multi-site collaboration; and students on clinical
placements.
Several themes recurred throughout the applications, which the
RIWA evaluation committee believe may be helpful to feedback to
the wider information community generally, to consider when
submitting a research application. They include:
* Clearly defining your research question e.g. what question are
you seeking to answer
* Clearly defining your research aims e.g. what are the general
aspirations of your project
* Clearly defining your research objectives e.g. what do you intend
to do to answer your question
* Structuring your proposal e.g. consider using the headings
suggested by the funding body
* Breaking down the costing included in the proposed budget e.g.
staff costs, travel, consumables
