Dear all,
I work in a University library and a large proportion of the students my
manager and I train are post-registration nurses on short courses. Rather
than schedule library skills training sessions for each group separately, we
run regular sessions at two levels of expertise every two weeks, on Monday
and Tuesday mornings, and it is up to the students to sign themselves up for
the sessions, preferably before their course starts. However, these
sessions are poorly attended, and I suspect it is because many students
cannot make sessions at those times.
We need to be more flexible in the times we offer training, but any changes
we make would have to fit around our schedule of training for
post-registration full time groups, and our regular enquiry desk duties, so
it's not going to be easy.
I was wondering what other librarians in similar situations do? I know that
the training IS wanted, because the NHS outreach librarian for our area has
told me that many of the nurses she trains are aware of their needs but
simply cannot make the sessions. Does anyone have any suggestions / ideas
about the best times of the week to schedule training sessions - or indeed
any other thoughts about how we can overcome this problem?
