Dear Colleagues
"The growing efficiency of inter library loans and borrowing requests through
networks such as Lis-Medical lead to print runs going down and prices going
up (somethinging none of us want!)".
I know for a fact that journal prices have never gone down irrespective of
our efficient ILL networking, and irrespective of journal print runs, so
I'm certain we are all suffering from journal price increases that bear no
relation to baseline inflation rates (something that continually bemuses my
Head of Finance when I try to increase my budget each year!).
The recent and highly regretable decision by the Office of "Fair" Trading
to uphold the international Elsevier publishing monopoly means that
librarians everywhere are likely to face further extortionate price
increases by this company. And this will probably be used as an exucse by
other publishers to hike their prices likewise.
BTW Theo is right about the CLA licence - I also understand that it
excludes electronic copying.
