Dear colleagues,
You are warmly invited to attend the HEALTH INFORMATION FORUM meeting at the
Royal College of Physicians, 11 St Andrews Place, Regent's Park, London NW1
4LE, on Tuesday 14 January 2003, 16:00 - 18:00h. Registration and
refreshments at 15:30h. To reserve your place, free of charge, please
contact Neil Pakenham-Walsh at <[log in to unmask]>.
The theme of the meeting is: 'HEALTH INFORMATION AND CONTINUING MEDICAL
EDUCATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES'
To chair the meeting, we are delighted to welcome Professor Carol Black,
President of the Royal College of Physicians.
The speakers are:
Bill Thomas & Andrea Kelly, Royal College of Surgeons of England
'Introduction to Surgical Skills': lessons learned from experience in South
Asia and southern Africa
Stephen Allen & Sarah Davies, E-learning Certification Programme in Global
Health, University of Oxford
Internet-based education for health professionals in Africa
There will also be a small-group session to discuss key issues such as:
* What is the role of Northern organizations in producing educational
materials for health professionals in developing countries?
* Can generic educational materials be adapted for local relevance? How can
local content be included?
* What lessons have been learned about the use of information and
communication technologies for CME in developing countries?
* CME in many parts of the world is currently based on multiple,
uncoordinated training workshops supported by various donor agencies. Such
workshops are resource-intensive and also take people away from their usual
place of work. How can this approach be rationalized and shifted towards
on-site learning?
The meeting is FREE of charge thanks to complimentary facilities from the
Royal College of Physicians, and sponsorship from the British Medical
Journal and Exchange. Please note that travel and accommodation expenses are
not available. If you are unable to attend the meeting in person, but would
like to contribute by email, please send your comments/questions to
<[log in to unmask]> and/or to Neil Pakenham-Walsh at <[log in to unmask]>.
