MAKING THE MOST OF MEDLINE
Library Association workshop, 27 February, London
This one-day hands-on course, originally developed for the British Library,
reviews the use of MeSH to construct search formulations for searching
MEDLINE. The morning is concerned with choosing the correct MeSH terms, and
the afternoon session looks at ways of narrowing down searches to a specific
set of references.
The course explains the meanings and significance of the annotations found
in MeSH records; reviews the tree structure of the MeSH trees; explains
coordination of MeSH terms; demonstrates the use of Allowable Qualifiers, or
Subheadings, to limit searches; explains the concepts of Major or Focus MeSH
headings; and shows how searches can be limited by, age, sex, animal
studies, human studies, and Publication Type.
The workshop includes a demonstration of the MeSH Browser, all the MeSH
headings in a convenient, free, and easy to use internet location: and
Pubmed, NLM's free internet access to MEDLINE. Plenty of time is provided
during the day for guided hands-on searching sessions.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* Discovered how MEDLINE is indexed, using the Medical Subject Headings
(MeSH) thesaurus.
* Learned how to read and understand the MeSH vocabulary.
* Gained an understanding of how to put together an accurate online search
strategy and how to broaden or narrow searches
* Explored how indexing systems help searchers to retrieve information
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING?
Researchers and information professionals with a basic knowledge of
searching MEDLINE who want to improve their searching skills. The course
will be of value to anyone who regularly searches MEDLINE, as well as those
