Apologies for crossposting
A summary from my colleague Stephanie of the contents of the latest complete
bulletin. I've changed the order a little so the several items likely to be
particularly relevant are nearer the beginning. For example, what happened
to the PubMed journal browser ( I did wonder why all I got from searching it
was details of the journal, not the option of searching PubMed for all its
citations any more...)
Turpins is the UK distributor of print versions of NLM publications. They
are selling the 2002 version of the journal listing, if you are still
interested in the paper version, for £59 in UK.
The bulletin is at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/current_issue.html
at time of writing, but if you try in a few days it may have moved to 'back
issues' (see link in horizontal green menu).

National Library of Medicine
Technical Bulletin 328 - September -October 2002
New version of NLM Gateway released
A new version of Gateway has recently been released. Details of the changes
can be found under the What's New heading on the NLM Gateway sidebar.
Population-related citations added to MEDLINE/PubMed
Over the next few weeks NLM will be adding approximately 100,000
population-related journal citations unique to the former POPLINE database
to MEDLINE. These citations will be searchable in PubMed. Unfortunately
NLM will be unable to add all the POPLINE journal citations because not all
the bibliographic data can be verified.
For these population-related journal citations, there are additional data
fields that are not yet searchable in PubMed but an announcement will be
made when this situation is reversed. For the time being these fields are
included in the PubMed XML display format.
Note to PubMed Cubby users: As they are new to MEDLINE and PubMed, the
population-related journal citations may be pulled by a Cubby stored search
using terms in this subject area.

New Entrez database: Journals
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has created a new
Entrez database, Journals. The new database replaces the PubMed Journal
Browser and provides additional search and display features. The Journals
database is available from the "Search" pull-down menu and from the PubMed
sidebar.
It is possible to use the Journals database to search for a journal and then
link to citations for that journal in PubMed, or the record for the journal
in the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) online catalog, Locatorplus.
The Entrez Journals database can be searched using the journal title, the
MEDLINE/PubMed title abbreviation, the NLM ID, the ISO abbreviation, and the
print and electronic International Standard Serial Numbers (pISSNs and
eISSNs).
Gene indexing
The index section at NLM has been providing gene indexing for MEDLINE
citations since the summer of 2001. In gene indexing, the indexer creates
links between MEDLINE citations and specific records in LocusLink.
LocusLink which was developed by the National Center for Biotechnology
Information (NCBI), provides a searchable interface to curated sequence and
descriptive information about genetic loci. It also includes information on
official nomenclature, aliases, sequence accessions, phenotypes, EC numbers,
MIM numbers, UniGene clusters, homology, map locations and related web
sites. At present there are six organisms in LocusLink - human, mouse,
rat, fruitfly, zebrafish and HIV-1. Additional organisms will be added in
the future.
Users retrieving articles in PubMed can go to LocusLink to learn more about
the genes and proteins being referenced. Links to LocusLink on PubMed
citations can be viewed using the LinkOut display format from the Links
pull-down menu.
MEDLINE/PubMed end of year activities
NLM is now involved in MEDLINE year end processing activities. These
include changing the MeSH headings on existing MEDLINE citations to agree
with the 2003 version of MeSH and other global changes such as amendments to
journal title abbreviations of supplementary concept substance names.
During the end of year activities NLM's schedule for adding indexed
citations to MEDLINE and PubMed will be temporarily interrupted. Once the
end of year activities are completed (tentatively December 2002), the normal
MEDLINE/PubMed update schedule will resume.
Indexed citations: From the end of October NLM will temporarily halt the
addition of new, fully indexed MEDLINE citations to PubMed. These citations
will be stored and added to PubMed when the normal schedule resumes.
In-process citations: During the end of year activities "in process"
citations will continue to be added to PubMed. As a result the number of
PubMed records labelled in that way will temporarily increase. These
citations do not have MeSH terms and the bibliographic citation data will
not have been checked for accuracy.
Searching: A search limiting terms to fields affected by indexing eg.
Robotics [mh] AND review [pt] does not retrieve in-process or publisher
supplied records. Therefore, during the end of year activities when NLM are
not adding completed, indexed citations to MEDLINE/PubMed, such searches,
including those stored in the Cubby, may not retrieve new records for some
weeks. To retrieve new, in-process records during this time, consider not
limiting searches to affected fields.
By December the in-process citations that are within MEDLINE scope and have
been "held" since the beginning of November will be replaced as indexed
citations with 2003 MeSH terms, Publication Types etc. The citation
bibliographic data will also have been checked for accuracy. Searches
including Cubby Stored Searches containing tagged search terms will then
retrieve all applicable MEDLINE records.
Corrections on hold: The corrected citations for MEDLINE journals also on
hold will appear in MEDLINE when the normal update schedule resumes.
Spanish version of MEDLINEplus released
The National Library of Medicine has recently announced the release of the
new Spanish version of Medlineplus the consumer health website.
Automated Indexing Implemented for Meeting Abstracts
As a result of various changes meeting abstracts, which are now full text,
have been converted and added to NLM Gateway. There are now approximately
63,000 meeting abstracts in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Health Services Research
and Space Life Sciences.
NLM has decided to use the Medical Text Indexer (MTI) automated indexing
system to index meeting abstracts available through the Gateway. MeSH terms
will be added when a meeting abstract is introduced to the Gateway
prospectively. Terms applied will be maintained each year in accordance
with annual MeSH changes. The terms reside, and are displayed, in the
Keyword field. There are no MeSH/subheadings combinations, and MTI does not
indicate major MeSH topics.
For the new version of Gateway all existing meeting abstracts were processed
by MTI. Automatically generated MeSH terms were added to the Keyword field,
and all previously existing MeSH terms and substance names were removed.
Gateway search translations were adjusted to take advantage of the new
keywords.
NLM Classification 2002 edition now available
Beginning with the 2002 edition, the NLM Classification is published in
electronic form and updated annually. The online environment offers many
advantages to users including hyperlinks between class numbers in the index
and the schedules, between terms within the index, and links from "MeSH Tree
icons" in the Index to the term in the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)
browser.
The development of the online data creation and maintenance system used to
produce this edition of the Classification gives NLM the ability to update
it annually in tandem with MeSH.
The 2002 edition incorporates all additions and changes to the schedules
since 1999. New class numbers were added and others deleted as needed to
reflect changes in MeSH and the biomedical and related sciences literature
catalogued. The Index was updated with appropriate MeSH concepts through
2002.
The NLM Classification is available for downloading in HTML at
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/class Publication of the printed editions are no
longer available.
NLM completes the reorganisation of its bibliographic databases
As part of NLM's project to modernise its computer systems the library
reorganised its bibliographic data into three groups:
1. Citations to journals and journal-like (eg newsletter) articles
published in most cases from 1966 onwards (MEDLINE/PubMed)
2. Citations to monographs (including book chapters) and to whole
serials (Locatorplus)
3. Citations to selected, individual meeting abstracts and journal
article citations that predate 1966 as a year of publication (OLDMEDLINE)
(NLM Gateway)
Reminder: Citations to bibliographic and other report-like data from
special collections and closed subfiles of TOXLINE are included on TOXNET.
The standard journal citations in toxicology that make up TOXLINE Core are
available as part of MEDLINE/PubMed.
Keeping up with Whats New with PubMed and the NLM Gateway
The Technical Bulletin features articles about PubMed and Gateway changes
and is updated everytime a new article is published.
Subscribing to NLM-Announces, NLM's electronic mailing, is another way to
keep up with new articles along with Technical Notes which are published in
the Technical Bulletin. Subscribers receive a weekly notification of
changes to the NLM web site including TB articles, PubMed, NLM exhibits,
MeSH, MEDLINEplus, the NLM classification and more. To subscribe to this
service email NLM as follows - [log in to unmask] the body of the
message should be the following text (not case sensitive) however your name
should be in upper and lower case eg Mary Smith: SUBSCRIBE NLM-ANNOUNCES

to a third party.
NLM indexes over half a million articles in the 2002 fiscal year
Indexers reached a new milestone by indexing 502,056 articles for MEDLINE in
the 2002 fiscal year compared to 463,014 in the 2001 fiscal year. It is
anticipated that number indexed in 2003 will rise to approximately 600,000.
Papers of Nobel scientists Barbara McClintock, Linus Pauling and Donald
Frederickson added to NLM Profiles in Science
The Barbara McClintock Papers, Linus Pauling Papers and Donald Frederickson
Papers are the most recent collections to be added to the NLM Profiles in
Science web site dedicated to the lives and works of prominent Twentieth
Century biomedical scientists.
NLM Profiles in Science, which was launched in September 1998, also includes
the papers of Oswald T Avery, Joshua Lederberg, Martin Rodbell, Julius
Axelrod, Christian Boehmer Andersen Jr. and Marshall Nirenberg. This is a
continuing project and announcements will be made when a new collection is
added to the site.
