Exciting programme announced for telehealth 2002

  <http://www.avienda.co.uk/news_IMG/4_humphrys-picture.jpg>

The exciting programme of speakers and subjects that will feature in the
forthcoming telehealth 2002 conference, taking place on Wednesday 27
November at One Great George Street in London, has now been published. Under
the chairmanship of renowned writer and broadcaster John Humphrys (pictured
left), keynote speeches from the Health Minister, Lord Hunt of King's Heath
and the Chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on Health, David
Hinchliffe MP, promise to make this an unmissable event.

telehealth 2002 includes a detailed look at the role of telecare
technologies in enabling patients to live independently and safely in their
own homes while being monitored remotely by their carers. Also included in
the programme is the role of telemedicine in improving cancer services by
bringing together specialists to share and discuss patient treatment plans;
telemedicine's role in enabling paramedics to respond to emergencies more
efficiently and avoid unnecessary ambulance journeys; how telemedicine and
ehealth can improve emergency care and bring specialist care directly to GP
surgeries and an exciting look at how the "Third Generation" of mobile
phones will revolutionise the way in which individuals manage their own
health and lifestyle.

Also featured in the programme is Lt-Col David Vassallo's moving insight
into the role of telemedicine in treating the victims of wars and
humanitarian disasters - several of whom will be our special guests at the
conference.

A "Question Time" style debate and discussion between the audience and the
panel will bring together leading healthcare commentators, including
TV-agony aunt and President of The Patients' Association, Claire Rayner;
General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, Dr Beverley Malone; Chief
Executive of the NHS Confederation, Dr Gill Morgan and Chairman of the UK
eHealth Association, Dr Ricky Richardson.

Programme

09:00 Registration and Refreshments

Session 1: The Future of Healthcare

09:30 Welcome
John Humphrys, Writer and Broadcaster

John Humphrys has been described by the Guardian as "one of the BBC's most
eminent journalists" and by the Daily Mail as "the foremost broadcaster of
his generation". John was the first of the BBC's journalists to present
front-line news programmes on both television and radio, including Today,
The Nine o'Clock News, On The Record, On the Ropes and Panorama and is well
known for his entertaining, informative and unscripted approach to
facilitating discussion and debate.

09:40 Keynote Address:
eHealth, Telemedicine and Telecare in the NHS Today
Lord Hunt of King's Heath, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for
Health, Department of Health

Philip Hunt was appointed a life peer in 1997. His career began in 1972 as a
works study officer with the Oxford Regional Hospital Board. Several years
and positions later, he became the first Chief Executive of the NHS
Confederation, having been Director of the National Association of Health
Authorities and Trusts (NAHAT) from its formation in 1990. His ministerial
responsibilities are NHS performance management, clinical quality and
information technology.

10:10 Keynote Address:
British Military Telehealth - Its Civilian, Humanitarian and Charitable
Applications
Lt-Col David Vassallo, Royal Army Medical Corps and Trustee, Swinfen
Charitable Trust, with
Gordon Carlson, Hope Hospital, Salford;
Bob Woodwards, North Manchester General Hospital and
Dr Srini Mukundan, Emory University, Atlanta.

David Vassallo has extensive operational experience in the Gulf, Northern
Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone and, most recently, Afghanistan. In
Kosovo he used telehealth technology to dramatic effect, catalysing the
evacuation to the UK of four seriously injured children and young adults for
specialist care. These patients and their surgeons have been reunited for
the first time since the conflict as the special guests of this conference.
Their striking stories prove how technology can help overcome the scars of
war.

10:40 Refreshments

Session 2: The Trailblazing Sites

11:00 Improving Primary and Intermediate Patient Care with Community
Paramedic Officers and Telemedicine
Roger C Thayne OBE, Chief Executive, Staffordshire Ambulance NHS Trust

With the right skills and technologies, paramedics have improved their
response to life threatening emergencies and reduced unnecessary ambulance
journeys to hospital.

11:15 The Benefits of Telehealth in General Practice
Dr Sohail B Munshi, General Practitioner, Collegiate Medical Centre,
Manchester

Telehealth technology can bring the benefits of many hospital specialties
directly to patients in their local GP surgery, delivering specialist care
locally and reducing waiting times.

11:30 The Hereford Minor Injuries Pilot - Making the Change from
Telemedicine to eHealth
Peter Knight, Senior Project Manager, Health Informatics Service, Hereford
General Hospital

Telemedicine and ehealth technologies are catalyzing profound improvements
in the quality of accident and emergency care through the greater use of
community hospitals and nurse practitioners.

11:45 The Use of Video Teleconferencing in the Cancer Multidisciplinary Team
Environment
Dr Mark Ashton, Consultant Cellular Pathologist, Northern Lincolnshire and
Goole Hospitals NHS Trust

Dramatic improvements in cancer care are being achieved by using
videoconferencing to integrate scarce medical expertise, alleviate
specialist shortages and improve patient access.

12:00 Surgical Telemedicine and Tele-education
Professor Ara Darzi, Professor of Surgery and Head of Department, Imperial
College School of Medicine

Technology is increasingly important in delivering education to
undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, as well as in enabling
remote consultations, managing difficult cases and reducing waiting times.

12:15 There's more than just a "G" in 3G - The Future of Telehealth is
Mobile!
Dr Simon Wallace, Independent Medical Consultant

The next generation of broadband mobile phones will not only bring personal
communications into the 21st century - they will revolutionise the way
individuals manage their own health and lifestyle.

12:30 Questions and Answers

13:00 Lunch

Session 3: Telecare in Health and Social Care

14:20 Sustaining Independent Living through Telecare Technologies
Dr Kevin Doughty, Director, Technology in Healthcare

The Government's desire to help support people in their own homes when they
become vulnerable will require a rapid growth in telecare services to keep
them safe, healthy and independent.

14:40 Using Assistive Technologies in Intermediate Care - A Partnership
Approach
Christina Sell, Older People Policy & Development Manager, Surrey County
Council

Telecare can be used to care for people who would otherwise face
inappropriate admission to NHS in-patient care and unnecessarily prolonged
hospital stays.

15:00 Keynote Address:
The Role of Telecare in Health and Social Care
David Hinchliffe MP, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the House of
Commons Select Committee on Health

Described by the Guardian as "dedicated" and "sensitised by personal
experience", David Hinchliffe - a former social worker - is the Labour MP
for Wakefield and Chair of the Health Select Committee. In that capacity he
has been responsible for the publication of reports by the Committee that
have exposed the role of the tobacco industry in covering up the health
effects of smoking and, more recently, a report on "delayed discharges"
which advocated greater uptake of telecare solutions within both health and
social care.

Session 4: Question Time

Chaired by John Humphrys with the Audience and Panelists:

Lord Hunt of King's Heath,
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health, Department of Health

David Hinchliffe MP,
Member of Parliament and Chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee
on Health

Lt-Col David Vassallo,
Royal Army Medical Corps and Trustee, Swinfen Charitable Trust

Dr Beverley Malone,
