Ovid Technologies, Ltd.. announces the establishment of an Ovid Regional
Data Centre (RDC) at the University of Manchester, U.K. The RDC will be
hosted by Manchester Computing at the University of Manchester and will
provide Ovid users in the U.K. with improved access to all Ovid resources.
It will enable Ovid customers in the U.K. to access Ovid content such as
Journals@Ovid and Books@Ovid from an in-country server with improved access
speed. It will allow Ovid customers to utilize Ovid tools such as OpenLinks
and Ovid@Hand, and ensure they receive the most current Ovid content and
Ovid tools available. Downtime will be reduced because maintenance will not
occur within business hours. Additionally the level of redundancy in the
system allows the service to remain available while maintenance takes place
on individual components.
The RDC will support ATHENS authentication and, following recent approval
from the NHSIA, will be accessible via NHSNet.
The RDC supersedes the successful "Biomed" server operated by EduServ
(NISS) which closes at the end of December. Customers will be contacted
shortly by Ovid in respect of the transfer arrangements. It is anticipated
that the RDC will commence operations in October 2002.
